Steve Porino is an American sports journalist, commentator, and former alpine ski racer. He is best known as a longtime broadcaster for NBC Sports, where he covers cycling and skiing events, including international competitions such as the Tour de France and the Alpine World Cup, as well as Olympic Games coverage.
Early life and skiing career
Steve Porino grew up in a family of skiers and began skiing at the age of three. He entered competitive racing by age six, and at 14 he enrolled in the Burke Mountain Ski Academy in Burke, Vermont. In 1988, he earned a place on the U.S. Ski Team as a downhill racer and competed with the national team until 1992.
After retiring from competitive racing, Porino coached the Snowbird Ski Team in Utah from 1993 to 1996 while completing a communications degree at the University of Utah.
Broadcasting career
Porino’s journalism career began after his coaching stint, first writing for Ski Racing Magazine. He transitioned into broadcast media in the late 1990s and joined NBC Sports’ broadcast team.
